The opening night of this year’s festival had all the hallmarks of a world-class musical event — soaring performances, an electric crowd, and one unforgettable moment that stole the show, as reported by Bolander Lifestyle.
That moment belonged to 22-year-old bassoonist Ofentse Segale, a scholarship student at UCT’s College of Music, who was called on stage and surprised with a brand-new instrument — a gift she never saw coming.
Until then, Segale had been playing on a borrowed bassoon, one that could no longer keep up with her advanced level. But thanks to more than 160 generous donors around the world, she now has an instrument that matches her talent.
“Ladies and gentlemen, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival has always been a great platform for surprises and for honouring those who deserve a break in life,” said the festival host as he introduced her. “So we are delighted to be able to award a special gift to a talented and dedicated up-and-coming young musician… Growing up in Soweto, through hard work she has risen to create a promising future for herself.”
Segale was joined on stage by principal donor Alex Andersson, flautist Ekaterina Kornishina, and Grammy-winning conductor Michael Repper, who transported the bassoon all the way from the US.
Her emotional reaction drew a standing ovation.
The evening continued with a powerful concert line-up, including Max Richter’s Four Seasons, a cello solo by Maja Bogdanović, and a spirited performance of Ravel’s Bolero — but it was Segale’s moment that lingered in the hearts of everyone who witnessed it.
The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival runs until 13 July, with daily student concerts, public masterclasses and evening performances featuring works by Beethoven, Brahms, Shostakovich, and a new piece inspired by the writings of Steve Biko.
