It’s been quite a ride this awards season, from controversial monologues and backstage reunions to stand-out fashion moments on the red carpet. We understand it can be tricky to keep up with everything that happens at this exciting time of year, as everyone gears up for the much anticipated final awards ceremony – the Oscars! So, we’ve compiled something of a round-up of all the most exciting, eyebrow-raising and inspiring awards season moments this year.
If you haven’t been glued to social media for the last month, here’s what you might have missed…
Ricky Gervais At The Golden Globes
He hosted the prestigious ceremony for the fifth and final time this year, and to say he left it all on the field would be an understatement. Known for his dry humour – and ability to make a room full of actors feel very uncomfortable – the English comedian came out in full force. Opening his monologue saying, “You’ll be pleased to know this is the last time I’m hosting these awards so, I don’t care anymore… I’m joking. I never did,” he went on to poke fun at almost everyone there. Happily, most people in the industry can laugh at themselves, too. Though, there were several visible cringes – Tom Hanks.

An Iconic Friendship Between Queens
Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep both attended this years’s Golden Globes and proved that the legendary acting pair are also good friends. While both actresses have played queens and monarchs several times throughout their careers, there’s certainly no sense of competition or animosity between them. In fact, at one point, Meryl was pictured helping Helen fix her beautiful burgundy gown that appeared to have suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction. We love this A-list friendship.
That Reunion At The SAG Awards
People took home awards, there were beautiful gowns worn by talented women, but one of the only things anyone was talking about after this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, was this backstage moment. Former husband and wife, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, both won awards for their respective roles – Brad for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Jennifer for The Morning Show. Two images of the pair congratulating each other backstage did the rounds on social media – and threatened to break the internet – and yes, we analysed them for quite some time.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Sweet Tribute
During his acceptance speech for the award for Best Actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Joaquin took a moment to pay tribute to the late great Heath Ledger. Joaquin won for his lead role in Joker, where he portrays the infamous Batman antagonist as we’ve never seen him, calling into question issues of mental illness and depression. Heath Ledger was the last actor to take on the role of the Joker. While he complimented the other actors nominated in the category, Joaquin ended his speech saying, “Really I’m standing here on the shoulders of my favourite actor, Heath Ledger.”
Charlize Theron’s Awards Season Fashion
She started the season in a sleek Celine dress and black blazer for the Critics’ Choice Awards, then stunned in a green and black couture Dior gown at the Golden Globes. At the next event – the SAG Awards – she ramped up the drama in a glittering crop top and belted black skirt by Givenchy. And, at last week’s BAFTA’s, she stole the show in a bold and extremely elegant pleated purple dress from Dior. One thing’s certain, we can’t wait to see her on the Oscars red carpet. Will she save the best for last?
Academy Awards this Sunday!
And, don’t forget that this year’s annual Academy Awards ceremony takes place this Sunday – well, Monday at 3am local time. There’s sure to be loads of drama, both on and off the red carpet, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates.
