The glitz and the glamour of the 77th Golden Globe Awards ushered the new year in with a bang. The 6th of January 2020 hosted memorable menswear moments, questionable fashion choices, and history in the making. If the thought of watching (or re-watching) the hours-long proceedings is too daunting, don’t fret. We’ve compiled a list of the unmissable moments from this year’s Golden Globes. Spoilers ahead!
Phoebe Waller-Bridge wins big
Relative newcomer and funny girl Phoebe Waller-Bridge had a phenomenal night at the Golden Globes. The second season of Phoebe’s comedy, Fleabag, garnered two awards. The show (which she writes, produces, and stars in) was named best TV series (musical or comedy) at the star-studded ceremony.
In her acceptance speech, Phoebe thanked former US president Barack Obama for recommending Fleabag as one of his favourite shows in 2019 in a recent tweet. Raunchy, vivacious, and fearless – Phoebe dominated these awards.
Importantly, be sure to keep an eye out for Phoebe in 2020 as she helped write the new James Bond flick No Time To Die, and she’s producing and starring in HBO’s comedy-thriller, Run.
Olivia Colman dons equality ring
Olivia Colman was honoured with the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series for The Crown. No shock there – she is exceptional as Queen Elizabeth II in season three of the series.
The outspoken actress made a statement on the red carpet. She wore a ring on her finger that read: “Equal representation for actresses, 50:50”.
So not only did she glow in her gorgeous red gown, she also seized the moment to bring to light the issue of gender parity in showbiz. Three cheers for powerful women!
Billy Porter rocked the red carpet (again)
Broadway stunner, activist, and writer Billy Porter wowed crowds in a tailored white blazer, flouncy skirt and jewel-tipped heels. Porter, known to push boundaries with his looks, didn’t disappoint at the Golden Globes.
At last year’s Oscars, he donned a black tuxedo dress and changed the menswear game. Here are some of Porter’s most iconic 2019 looks:

This past year was a big one, hunties! Bare with me as I continue to reflect! I gagged when @google named "Billy Porter Red Carpet" the number one red carpet search in 2019, leading a list that also includes @iamcardib and @ladygaga. What an insane milestone. A sincere "Thank You" to ALL my collaborators in 2019, including my Creative Director & Stylist @sammyratelle and the countless designers who helped create all the magic. 🔮 Now, brace yourselves for my 2020 lewks, kweens! #YearInSearch
The POSE star, who was nominated in the best actor in a television series category, floated down the red carpet in angelic white.
His highly curated, detail-oriented look sure turned heads and Porter continues to steal the (awards) show with his daring looks.

The jewels are by @tiffanyandco with styling by @sammyratelle . . It’s such an honor to return to this year’s 77th annual @goldenglobes in support of @poseonfx. A show that has completely changed my life and created visibility for our marginalized #lgbtq family. Our show is particularly important as currently our human rights are still under attack and our political world is in shambles. The world has gone absolutely mad and when we started to think about what I would wear today, the first major appearance of the new decade, we decided to go all white. The color symbolizes peace, hope, and new beginnings. My @tiffanyandco dragonfly brooch is symbolic of transformation and self-realization. All of these themes and symbols encapsulate my hope for all people in 2020. We must continue to strive for life and kindness. Especially when our world is on fire . . Renée Zellweger hid her twisted ankle with a flowing gown
Seeing her strut, you’d think nothing was amiss… But, Ms Zellweger was actually walking the Golden Globes red carpet with a twisted ankle!
The star hid her swollen ankle ingeniously with her baby blue flowy gown and even managed to keep her heels on all night. Talk about star quality…
Ankle aside, Zellweger won her fourth Golden Globe for her impassioned portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy. In her acceptance speech she paid tribute to Garland, calling her “one of the great icons of our time.”
Her acceptance speech did leave viewers quite confused though… The actress has become widely recognised for her comedic work on the Bridget Jones series, leading everyone to believe she was British.
However, during her interviews, her Texan twang shone through – especially when referring to the crowd as “ya’ll”. As a result, everyone was left scratching their heads.
J-Lo’s fashion faux pas
Admittedly, there is very little that 50-year-old actress and singer Jennifer Lopez could look bad in… However, she definitely pushed the (Christmas) envelope with her gold, green, and white flouncy gown.
Subsequently, eagle-eyed internet users were quick to point out the similarity between Jen’s dress and Christmas wrapping paper. The over-sized golden lopsided bow is most probably what gave it away…

The actress was nominated for best supporting actress in a motion picture for her role as Ramona in the box office smash hit Hustlers.
Awkwafina made history
Nora Lum, known by her stage name, Awkwafina, became the first Asian woman to win a Golden Globe in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category. She won the award for her riveting performance in The Farewell, a Chinese family drama dealing with love, cancer, and loss.
In short, you may recognise Awkwafina for her comedic roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Oceans Eight… But this awards season is sure to mark her arrival in the big league. Above all, The 31-year-old singer and actor is just getting started. We can’t wait to see what she gets up to next.
