Tyla has been building momentum at a pace that few South African artists have matched, and her next stop is one of the most coveted stages in Afrobeats: AfroNation Portugal. The Grammy-winning singer will headline the annual festival at Praia da Rocha in Portimão alongside Nigerian superstar Wizkid, Asake, American rapper Gunna and Mariah the Scientist — a lineup that reflects just how firmly she has established herself as a peer of the genre’s biggest international names.
It is her second time on the AfroNation stage, and this time she arrives as a headliner rather than a featured act. The timing is deliberate. Every major performance between now and the release of her sophomore album A*POP is part of a carefully built campaign, and AfroNation — which draws audiences from more than 100 countries — is one of the most powerful platforms on which to announce what is coming next.
South Africa is well represented
Tyla will not be the only South African name making an impression in Portugal. Amapiano continues its global expansion, with the likes of Kelvin Momo and Zee Nxumalo among those expected to represent the genre’s growing international audience.
Actor and DJ Hungani Ndlovu, who revived his DJ career just a month ago under the name DJ Grizi, has also confirmed two performances in the Algarve region during the same period. He announced the news with characteristic energy, noting that while he had not planned the trip, God apparently had.
AfroNation, launched in 2019, has rapidly become the defining festival for African music and its diaspora — the place where the continent’s sound meets the world. South Africa’s increasing presence there is both a reflection of the music’s momentum and a sign of things to come.
