Prince Harry and Meghan are preparing to make their first joint public engagement since moving back to the UK, with a return to a city that already holds a notable place in their story.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to visit Nottingham on Thursday, 15 October, for a series of community-focused engagements. It will be their first public outing of this kind together since they returned to Britain with their children, Archie and Lilibet, in August.
Why Nottingham matters to Harry and Meghan
Nottingham was the setting for Harry and Meghan’s first joint official appearance after announcing their engagement in 2017. Their return almost nine years later gives the visit an added layer of symbolism, particularly as the couple begins to establish a more visible public routine in the UK again.
They are expected to spend time with local projects supporting young people and communities through areas including music, film, sport and food support. One of the organisations reportedly on the itinerary is the Community Recording Studio, which Harry has visited before.
The focus is familiar territory for the Sussexes, whose work since stepping back from royal duties has continued to centre on charitable initiatives, youth programmes and community organisations.
Their UK return has reopened questions about public life
Harry and Meghan stepped away from duties as working members of the royal family in 2020 and later settled in California. Their decision to return to Britain with Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, in August 2026 therefore marked a significant change after six years based in the United States.
The move has also renewed debate around how their public roles should be understood. Guidance issued on King Charles III’s behalf last month reiterated that the couple are not working royals and that their charitable and commercial activities are undertaken in a private capacity.
That distinction has not stopped them from remaining high-profile public figures. The Nottingham itinerary, with multiple community stops and a familiar engagement format, is likely to draw comparisons with the appearances they made while still carrying out royal duties.
Royal relationships remain under scrutiny
The couple’s return has also brought renewed attention to their relationship with the wider royal family. Harry has had periods of improved contact with his father, while his relationship with Prince William is still widely reported to be strained.
For now, Thursday’s visit appears to be less about royal status and more about the kind of public-facing charity work Harry and Meghan have continued to pursue outside the institution. Choosing Nottingham for their first joint engagement since returning to the UK also gives the couple a chance to revisit a place connected to the beginning of their public life together.
