Being in between sizes can be frustrating – you can have a pants in one size and a blazer in another, neither a true reflection of your body. But it’s important to remember your body isn’t the problem. Instead, focus on how a garment fits on your frame – and of course, whether it makes you feel confident and stylish.

When getting dressed, does one size feel a bit too snug, and another too loose? Generally, sizing can dramatically vary between brands. Our bodies also naturally fluctuate, so being in between sizes is quite common. The solution isn’t to just size up or squeeze into a smaller size – it’s about focusing on fit, comfort and proportions.
Let the fabric do half the work
When you’re between sizes, fabrics with some stretch in them can be your best friend. You don’t want your clothes to lose shape either, so go for fabrics like knits, jersey and denim, which will comfortably accommodate small fluctuations.
For trousers and skirts, go for comfy waistbands, adjustable details and side elastication. These small design features make for a more forgiving garment.
Create shape with styling
You don’t have to drown in oversized clothing. If an item is looser than you’d prefer, create definition elsewhere.
A cropped jacket over a longer top, a half-tucked shirt, or a belt worn loosely at the natural waist are chic options you can try. You can also pair a flowy dress with a structured jacket, or balance a wide-leg pants with a fitted top.
Choose a larger size when needed
It’s more comfortable to get a larger size in clothing such as a blazer, tailored dress or coat. You may need extra room through the bust, waist or hips, and it’s easier to adjust than clothing that pulls, strains or restricts movement.
Look for pieces that have a bit of structure but aren’t rigid. A well-cut jacket worn open, for example, creates a beautifully polished silhouette, without requiring a perfect fit.
Stop dressing for the label
The most important shift is to not treat the size printed inside your clothing as a judgement of your body. Given the inconsistency of sizes, your body is not supposed to remain static. Rather clothing should accommodate your body, even if it means sizing up for one garment.
Buy what fits your body, buy what you love, buy what makes you look and feel fabulous. The goal is not to fit perfectly into a garment, it’s to like what you see in the mirror.
