The way you do your make-up can make you look like you’ve had a mini-facelift. But even if that’s not your goal, the right technique can accentuate your features, giving you a lifted and sculpted look and making you look more ‘awake’. Learn how to make your cheekbones look higher and your eyes brighter.

The reason why we love make-up so much is because just by using placement and technique, we can instantly enhance our bone structure. Isn’t that magical? And you don’t even have to dramatically change your features. The right approach can create the illusion of higher cheekbones, brighter eyes and a more defined jawline. Here are some make-up artist-approved tricks worth trying.
1. Skincare first
It all starts before you even touch foundation. Well-hydrated skin just reflect light more evenly, creating a plumper look. When you apply moisturiser, allow it to fully absorb into the skin before you put on any make-up. If your skin is looking red, use a brightening primer to add radiance and help make-up slide on smoother.
2. Apply foundation upwards
Applying foundation up and out can create a tighter and sculpted appearance. So instead of buffing downwards, use upward strokes along the cheeks and towards the hairline. This way it won’t settle into fine lines. Also remember to press, and not wipe or drag.
3. Lift with concealer placement
No need for big triangles under the eyes. Place a small amount (1–2 tones lighter than skin tone) at the inner corners and outer corners of eyes. Blend towards the temple. Use a tiny bit of translucent powder with a fluffy brush to prevent settling into lines. A pro tip is to keep your concealer matte or satin.
4. Angle your blush higher
If you want to affect the overall shape of your face, blush placement will get you there. Sweep blush across the upper part of the cheeks and blend towards the temple. If you place it too low, it can pull the facial features down instead of creating lift.
5. Contour lightly
A masterful and flattering contour looks like a shadow, not a stripe. So you don’t need a heavy hand here at all – apply contour beneath the cheekbones, lightly at the temples and along the jawline. Blend upwards for a natural and sculpted effect.
6. Use highlighter strategically
A touch of highlighter on top of the cheekbones, inner corners of the eye and brow bones draws attention to the highest points of the face. The result is a face that doesn’t look too made up but still lifted.
7. Finish with eye-opening effect
Apply and concentrate mascara on the outer corners of the eyes and curl the lashes to create a cat-eye effect that’s subtle enough. To finish, brush the brows upwards to complete the sculpted look.
