Fresh coffee delivered to your door sounds lovely, but it is also one more monthly payment. Before you sign up, it helps to know what you are getting and who it suits best. Here is how to decide if a coffee subscription is worth your money.

What is a coffee subscription?
A coffee subscription is a plan where a roaster sends you coffee on a regular schedule, such as every two weeks or once a month. You usually choose the type of coffee, like beans, ground coffee or pods, and how much you want. Some plans let you pick the same coffee every time. Others send something new each month, so you can try different flavours.
When it is worth it
A subscription makes sense if you drink coffee most days. Beans are usually roasted shortly before they are sent, so they taste fresher than a bag that has been sitting on a shop shelf. It is also a good fit if you enjoy trying new blends and small roasters you might not find in your local supermarket.
When it might not be worth it
If you already have a favourite coffee, a plan that sends something different each month may disappoint you. If you only have a cup or two a week, your coffee can go stale before you finish the bag. Delivery fees can also add up, so check whether the total price is higher than what you would pay in the shop. Finally, look at how easy it is to skip or cancel, because piles of unopened coffee are no fun.
How to work out the right amount
Start by checking how much coffee you use in a week. Many people use around 15 to 20 grams for one cup, so a 250g bag lasts about 12 to 16 cups. If you have two cups a day, that bag will be gone in about a week. Match the bag size and delivery schedule to this, so your coffee stays fresh and you do not pay for more than you need.
What to check before you sign up:
-
Can you pause, skip or cancel at any time?
-
Is delivery included, or is it an extra cost?
-
Do you get to choose your coffee, or is it a surprise each time?
-
Is there a discount on your first bag, and what does the price change to afterwards?
So, should you subscribe?
A coffee subscription is worth it if you drink coffee often, enjoy fresh beans and like the idea of trying something new. It also saves you the trouble of running out of coffee and having to rush to the shop when you would rather be sitting down with a cup. If you drink it only now and then, or you are happy with your usual brand, buying from the shop may suit you better. Whichever you choose, start with a small bag or a short plan so you can see if it works for you.
