Saving for a trip sounds exciting until your friends invite you out for dinner and you’re checking your balance first. It can feel like everyone else is having fun while you’re stuck at home counting your money. But you can save for the trip you want and still enjoy life along the way.

Start with the real cost
It’s hard to save for a number you haven’t worked out. Add up flights, accommodation, food, getting around and a bit extra for things you’ll want to do when you get there. Then divide that by the number of months you have.
Research where you’re going
Before you decide how much to save, find out what the place is really like. Search for it online and look at recent posts, not just the polished travel sites. TikTok is useful for this, because people post real reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions, often only days after they visited. You’ll see what’s worth the money and what isn’t.
Once you know, you can decide what would be most memorable for you. That might be a special meal, a tour or just a good room with a view. Put your money towards those things and skip the rest, so every rand you save goes on something you’ll enjoy.
Prioritise what you value most
You can’t do or buy everything, so decide what matters most to you. Ask yourself what you’d be happiest to have in a year’s time: the trip, or a few small things along the way. Keep the things that make your weeks better, like a coffee with a friend or a favourite treat, and let go of the ones you barely notice. When you’re clear on what’s worth it, saying no gets a lot easier.
Set the money aside on payday
Set up a separate savings account just for the trip and move money into it on payday, before you start spending. If it sits in your main account, it’s too easy to use. When it’s already put away, you can spend what’s left without worrying.
Say yes to the right plans
You don’t need to turn down every invitation. Suggest a picnic instead of a restaurant, a walk instead of a day at the mall, or a game night at home instead of drinks out. You still see the people you love, and it costs far less.
Think about when you travel
Flights and accommodation can cost a lot less outside school holidays and busy seasons. If you can be flexible, you may need to save less to get the same trip.
Give yourself a little room
Add a small amount each month for treats, so you’re not tempted to give up halfway. It’s better to save a bit less and stick with it than to push too hard and stop after a few weeks.
Don’t forget to enjoy the wait
Looking forward to a trip is part of the fun, so make the most of it while you save. The trip is the reward, and every time you pass on something you didn’t really want, you’re a step closer to it. Saving doesn’t mean missing out. It means choosing what matters most to you.
