Want to create a personal retreat spot in your home? Follow these practical tips to add comfort, warmth and personality to any space.
In today’s busy world where sounds, pings, screens and people demand every ounce of our attention, there’s such little time and space to redirect our energy back to ourselves, which is why carving out a personal space for relaxation is more important than ever. A cosy nook is a simple way to create a sanctuary in your home, no matter how small your space may be. Whether you want a quiet corner to have you tea, catch up on some reading, or simply unwind, transforming an unused area can make a huge difference.

1. Choose your spot
The first step is to identify any overlooked or underused space in your home. It could be a corner in your living room, an alcove, a window seat, a closet or a wide hallway. If possible, choose a spot with lots of natural light, although if you go with a dimmer space, you can always transform it with the right lighting.
2. Comfort is key
Plush cushions, throws and soft fabrics all add to the comfort factor, especially now in the colder months. Invest in a good-quality, comfy rug and mix textures to create depth. You want an inviting space where you can let out a sigh and relax.
3. Personalise your space
Add items that reflect your personality. It can be your favourite books (or a mini bookshelf), scented candles, or artwork. Adding a plant or two will bring a touch of calmness to your space.
4. Lighting
Good lighting is essential, essentially if you plan on doing a lot of reading, but also to create ambiance. Opt for warm and soft options like table- or floor lamps to create that soothing glow.
5. Keep it clutter-free
Tidiness helps with maintaining a calm atmosphere. Use baskets, small shelves, or a side table to store essentials, ensuring that your space stays practical and beautiful.
Creating a personal haven to recharge and slow down is a great way to prioritise yourself and to encourage others – especially children – to do the same. And best of all, it doesn’t require a lot of space, just a bit of creativity.
