Working from home? These simply daily habits will help you stay active, focused, and feeling good. No gym required.
The lockdown period showed many people that it’s possible to work from home and still retain productivity. Commute time was cut out, hours were flexible and we got a cosy work space. But there’s always a trade-off. It became so easy to stay glued to our chairs all day. Without a daily walk to the office or stairs to climb, movement can quickly fall off the radar. The good news? A few small, intentional habits can help you stay active and clear-minded throughout the day.
Start your day with movement
Wake up a bit earlier so that you don’t have to dive into emails or meetings first thing. Instead, set the tone with some movement. A 10-minute yoga session, or a walk around the block can lift your energy and put you in the right headspace. It will also reduce stiffness and improve concentration for the day ahead.

Schedule movement breaks
When you’re focused on a task, time can disappear, so set reminders to move. Try the Pomodoro method: 25 minutes of work followed by a 5-minute break, or simply stand up every hour. Use the break to stretch, walk through the house or do some squats.
Make meetings mobile
You don’t have to be on screen for every meeting. If you have a phone call or a meeting that’s audio only, walk while you talk. Pacing around the room or stepping outside gives you a change of scenery and fresh air, which will give you a mental boost.
Create a flexible workspace
Sitting for hours isn’t ideal, and few of us have the proper posture. Sitting poorly can even lead to developing dowager’s hump. If possible, alternate between sitting and standing. A laptop riser or kitchen counter can work as a standing desk. Changing your position regularly improves posture and prevents fatigue.
Build movement into everyday tasks
Look for natural chances to move: squats while waiting for the kettle, stretching while a view is loading, or calk raises while brushing your teeth. These little bursts of activity add up quickly.
Working from home is great, because we don’t have to adhere to a structured office environment. So we have to manage ourselves with intention. With a few mindful habits, you can keep your body moving and your mind sharp, without leaving the house.
