Veteran broadcaster Darren Scott has passed away after a brave and prolonged battle with stage 4 malignant melanoma. He was 61.
Scott, a beloved voice across South African airwaves for over four decades, died surrounded by loved ones after living with melanoma for more than 38 years — a fight marked by resilience, humour, and unwavering dedication to the craft of radio.
News of his passing was confirmed by HOT 102.7FM on Tuesday, where he had become a cornerstone presenter and integral part of the station’s identity.
“Darren was many things: a gifted communicator, a music lover, a sports encyclopaedia, a deeply spiritual soul, and a loyal friend. But above all, he was radio,” a tribute shared by Scott’s HOT 107.2 FM colleagues read.

Scott’s broadcasting journey began at Radio Bop before he became a familiar presence on 5FM, Jacaranda FM, East Coast Radio and eventually HOT 102.7FM.
He is remembered for his uncanny ability to connect with listeners, making each one feel like he was speaking just to them.
“Watching him do what he does best was incredible,” said fellow presenter Shane “Duke” Wellington. “He had that gift. That gift that makes you feel like he’s speaking directly to you.”
Scott was honoured last year with induction into the Radio Awards Hall of Fame, recognising his 40-year contribution to South African radio.

Colleagues and friends describe Darren not only as a brilliant communicator and sports encyclopaedia, but also as a deeply spiritual man and devoted father.
His ex-wife, Sarah-Kate Accettato, who returned from the US to care for him in his final months, thanked those who supported him through a crowdfunding campaign.
“There are no words to truly express the depth of my gratitude to every single person who donated, prayed, and stood beside him during the fight of his life. Your generosity through the Back-a-Buddy campaign didn’t just fund treatment—it gave Darren hope. It gave him dignity. And it gave him the profound gift of feeling so loved. I watched him, day after day, scroll through your messages in disbelief — humbled, overwhelmed, moved to tears. He couldn’t believe that so many people cared. Thank you for giving him that in his final months,” she wrote.
Darren Scott is survived by his sons, Mark and Matthew. His presence on the airwaves — and in the hearts of those who knew him — will be deeply missed.
