Olympic snowboarder Shaun White and actress Nina Dobrev have ended their engagement, bringing their five-year relationship to a close. The couple confirmed the split was amicable and made with “love and deep respect”.

A relationship that began in 2019
White, 39, and Dobrev, 36, first crossed paths briefly in 2012, but it was not until 2019 that they reconnected while speaking at a motivational event in Florida. By the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the pair had moved in together, documenting their time in lockdown with playful posts, including Dobrev giving White a haircut that went viral.
Their relationship blossomed from there, with Dobrev supporting White during his final Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, which he described as an “emotional” and defining moment of his career.
Engagement and public life
The couple became known for their affectionate social media presence, as well as regular appearances on red carpets and at international events. White proposed in October 2024 with a five-carat diamond ring during a surprise dinner in New York. At the time, the snowboarder wrote, “She said yes,” while Dobrev joked in her caption, “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé.”

In recent years, they were seen at high-profile gatherings such as the Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, film premieres in Los Angeles, and fashion shows in Courchevel and Miami.
Signs of change
Speculation about the couple’s status grew earlier this month when Dobrev attended the Toronto International Film Festival without her engagement ring. She also quietly removed the engagement announcement from the top of her Instagram profile. Just days earlier, the two were spotted together in Los Angeles, holding hands while running errands.
Parting on good terms
Although their engagement has ended, a source close to the couple stressed that the decision was mutual. “It wasn’t an easy choice, but it was made with love and respect,” they said.
Neither White nor Dobrev has publicly commented further on the split, but both are expected to continue focusing on their respective careers.
