South African entertainer Ian von Memerty has died at the age of 61.
His family confirmed that he passed away in Johannesburg in the early hours of 23 February 2026, asking for privacy as they grieve.
“We are sad to announce that our beloved Ian von Memerty passed away at the age of 61 in Johannesburg,” the family said in a statement.
“As a family, we have done everything we can to love and respect him on his journey. We ask for privacy and respect as we deal with our own pain, having lost someone we’ve loved very much.”
A familiar face on South African screens
Von Memerty was a household name in South Africa, best known for hosting Strictly Come Dancing between 2006 and 2008 and for serving as a judge on SA’s Got Talent from 2009 to 2012.
His television presence was defined by warmth, wit and an unmistakable theatrical flair.
Long before his mainstream TV fame, he had built a formidable stage career. Over decades in the performing arts, he earned 15 national theatre awards and became widely respected for productions including A Handful of Keys, Hollywood Rocks, Broadway Rocks, Buddy and Grease.
Early in his career, he also co-hosted Muzik a la Carte alongside Sandy Ngema.
A controversial final project
In the weeks leading up to his death, von Memerty released a digital series titled Dying for a Better Life on Facebook and YouTube. In it, he spoke openly about ageing, autonomy and his views on end-of-life decision-making.
He described the project as an exploration of “the facts, choices, realities and responsibilities around old age and dying,” and argued that personal agency in such matters should be part of broader societal conversations.
His reflections touched on financial anxiety, fear of dependency, and the emotional impact of witnessing the prolonged illnesses of his parents.
The series sparked divided public opinion, with some praising his candour and others expressing concern.
Tributes from colleagues and fans
Following news of his passing, tributes poured in from friends, colleagues and audience members.
Many remembered him as a mentor, a sharp intellect and a performer with extraordinary energy and range.
Von Memerty is survived by his wife of 34 years, Vivienne Lawrence, and their two children, Oscar and Kasvia. He had previously described his children as “the longest running and most fulfilling production of my life.”
Ian von Memerty leaves behind a significant cultural footprint in South African theatre and television — one built on talent, reinvention and a fearless willingness to speak his mind.
