UK pop star Dua Lipa has gone viral after a candid reaction to a fan’s heavily filtered selfie during a recent visit to Cape Town.
The moment unfolded during a casual breakfast stop at Our Local Restaurant on Kloof Street on Sunday, 18 January, where the singer was approached by a fan filming a short selfie video.
In the clip, which was later posted to TikTok, Lipa smiles beside the fan before suddenly realising a beauty filter has been applied. Visibly surprised, she responds with a blunt but amused: “Wow, this filter, bloody hell!” before politely continuing the interaction.
“Yes, I had a great time. Thank you so much,” she added when asked about her meal.

A relatable reaction
The video quickly gained traction online, amassing hundreds of thousands of views and spreading across TikTok, Instagram and X. Much of the reaction focused on Lipa’s unscripted response, which many viewers found refreshingly honest.
Social media users debated the etiquette of applying beauty filters to celebrities without their consent, with some pointing out the irony of filtering one of pop culture’s most photographed figures.
One user wrote: “Imagine filtering THE Dua Lipa.”

Cape Town sighting fuels fan buzz
Lipa’s appearance in Cape Town sparked further excitement among fans, with reports of her dining at La Colombe in Constantia during the same visit. Fresh off the end of her Radical Optimism world tour, the singer has gained a reputation among fans for her frequent travel, earning her the affectionate nickname “Vacanza queen”.
From YouTube covers to global stardom
Born to Kosovo Albanian parents, Lipa began her career by posting song covers on YouTube before landing her first break in a 2013 ITV advertisement for The X Factor. She released her debut single, New Love, in 2015, followed by her breakthrough hit Be The One.
Now one of the world’s biggest pop stars, Lipa recently joined the “2016” nostalgia trend on Instagram, sharing throwback images from a decade ago alongside celebrities such as Jimmy Fallon and Post Malone.
Captioning the post, she wrote: “Wow, these 2016 memories are making me wanna unarchive everything.”
