Rugby star Cheslin Kolbe and his wife Layla have marked a sweet family milestone, celebrating their eldest daughter Kyla’s ninth birthday. Layla shared the occasion on Instagram on Monday, posting photos of Kyla surrounded by close family and friends.
“Happy ninth birthday to our precious Kyla. You are deeply loved and highly favoured baby girl,” read one of the messages shared alongside the images. Another added: “Full of sparkle, full of shine. Happy birthday, beautiful Kyla, you are 9.”
A family on the move
The Kolbes, who have three children together — two daughters and a son — are no strangers to life abroad. The family recently relocated to Japan after spending a year back in South Africa, a return that Layla described as particularly meaningful for their children.
“What a year in SA, especially for the kids — beautiful friendships, teachers they adored, a sense of home, and so many memories,” she wrote on Instagram ahead of their departure. “Leaving that behind makes the goodbyes so much heavier.”
The move was not without its emotional weight. Layla previously spoke openly about the bittersweet nature of the rugby life, noting that missing family milestones and festive seasons at home are among the harder sacrifices. “But always grateful for the doors it opens too,” she added.
Kyla’s birthday brings a moment of joy amid a season of new beginnings for the Kolbe family, now settling into life in Japan for another chapter of Cheslin’s career.
