The Fenty family and the nation of Barbados are mourning the passing of Ronald Fenty, father of global music icon and entrepreneur Rihanna. He died on 31 May in Los Angeles at the age of 70, following a short illness.
According to Starcom Network News in Barbados, Ronald was surrounded by family members at the time of his death. Rihanna’s brother Rajad Fenty was seen arriving at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, reportedly accompanied by the singer herself.

A father, mentor and proud Barbadian
Born in Barbados in 1954, Ronald Fenty was a warehouse supervisor and businessman known for his work ethic and strong community ties. He is survived by six children: Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty), Rorrey Fenty, and Rajad Fenty from his marriage to Monica Braithwaite, and Samantha, Kandy, and Jamie Fenty from previous relationships.
Ronald and Monica Braithwaite were married for more than 15 years before divorcing in 2002. Despite their separation, the family remained central to Ronald’s life.
National tributes and condolences
Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley issued a formal statement of condolence, paying tribute to Ronald’s life and his contribution to the island’s cultural fabric.
“Ronald Fenty was a son of Barbadian soil, whose life story reflected the resilience and spirit of our nation. While he may be known for playing a significant role in shaping the woman our National Hero Rihanna has become, the truth is that his journey here on earth has touched many more lives,” Mottley said.
She described him as a complex and deeply rooted individual—“a father, friend, neighbour, and proud Barbadian”—whose personal journey resonated with many in the local community.
A complicated but impactful relationship
Though Ronald and Rihanna shared a complicated relationship over the years—marked by periods of estrangement and reconciliation—his influence on her life and early music career has been well-documented. He was an early supporter of her musical ambitions, encouraging her to pursue opportunities abroad.
Their relationship faced public scrutiny in 2019 when Rihanna filed a lawsuit against her father and his business partner, Moses Perkins. The suit alleged they launched a company called Fenty Entertainment and used her name without authorisation, misleading the public and damaging her brand. The case, which involved allegations of false advertising and invasion of privacy, was later dropped in 2021 before going to trial.
Despite these legal issues, Ronald remained a significant figure in Rihanna’s life, and reports suggest she was by his side in his final moments. His death comes at a poignant time, as Rihanna is currently expecting her third child with rapper A$AP Rocky, who is said to have rushed to support her following the news.
