Kim Kardashian has spoken out in defence of her daughter North West’s distinctive fashion choices, addressing growing public criticism around the 12-year-old’s appearance and self-expression.
North, the eldest child of Kardashian and rapper Kanye West, frequently attracts attention online for her bold looks, including colourful hair, fake facial piercings and unconventional outfits that regularly spark debate on social media.
Speaking during a podcast conversation with her sister Khloé Kardashian, Kim addressed the scrutiny and assumptions people make about her parenting.
“I’m just not a judgmental person like that, so I try not to pay attention to it,” she said. “No one really knows what it’s like unless they’re in my shoes, what I’m dealing with and how we have to manage certain things from the outside world, or even close in our life, that we go through together.”
‘She actually has a lot of rules’
While some online commentators have accused Kardashian of allowing North too much freedom or encouraging her to grow up too fast, Kim rejected the idea that she is trying to be her daughter’s “best friend” rather than a parent.
“One misconception is that I’m trying to be her bestie and letting her get away with a lot,” she said. “That’s not true. Northie actually has a lot of rules. The one area where I do give her freedom is letting her express herself.”
Kardashian added that North’s love for bold fashion and experimentation did not suddenly emerge because of social media attention.
“I have pictures of her in first grade and pre-K with fake septum rings and colourful braids,” she said. “People think this all started now, but she’s always been that kid.”
‘She’s always been unapologetic’
According to Kardashian, North has consistently gravitated towards expressive looks and creative styling from a young age.
“She really is who she is and always has been that girl,” she said. “Unapologetically. And I nurture that.”
As North continues to grow up in the public eye, her fashion choices remain a frequent talking point online. Kardashian maintains that while boundaries remain in place, allowing her daughter space to explore her identity is important.
“My job is to protect her,” she said, “but also to let her be who she is.”
