The announcement was made at the end of last year. The ceremony happened on Tuesday. Idris Elba was officially knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, formally receiving the honour announced in the New Year Honours list for his services to young people.
The 53-year-old actor was among 68 honourees at the investiture. He founded the Elba Hope Foundation in 2022, an organisation that invests in education, economic opportunity and entrepreneurship for young people, and has been a vocal campaigner against knife crime in the United Kingdom for several years.
What the honour represents
When the knighthood was first announced, Elba was clear about who he felt the recognition truly belonged to. I receive this honour on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition, and resilience have driven the work of the Elba Hope Foundation, he said at the time.

He added that he hoped the recognition would draw further attention to the importance of sustained, practical support for young people — and to the shared responsibility to offer them alternatives to violence.
The official ceremony brings a formal close to the announcement, placing the title of Sir permanently before one of the most recognisable names in British and global entertainment.
