Former Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida, is proving that beauty, brains, and purpose can coexist powerfully. Now based in New York, the model-turned-global advocate has just completed her first year at Columbia University while playing an active role in shaping conversations at the United Nations.

Columbia and beyond: An academic path rooted in purpose
Since trading her pageant crown for academic robes, Musida—affectionately known as Shudu—has embarked on a bold new chapter. In 2024, she completed her first year of a Master of International Affairs (MIA) at Columbia University, specialising in economic and political development. The programme is renowned for cultivating future global leaders, and for Shudu, it’s a natural progression.
Even during her reign, she was a vocal advocate for mental health and social justice. Her current academic journey is a reflection of that enduring passion—using intellect and empathy to fuel lasting change on a global scale.
Amplifying unheard voices at the United Nations
Juggling a demanding course load has not stopped Musida from making her mark on international platforms. She’s been a moderator at several high-level events at the United Nations, advocating for women’s rights and mental health support in crisis zones.
In a recent panel on sexual and reproductive health, she reflected on the human side of policy:
“Behind every policy, headline, and crisis response, there are people. Women and girls whose lives hang in the balance. Their health—mental and physical—must be a priority, not an afterthought.”
Her eloquence and authenticity have earned the respect of key global figures, including UNFPA Executive Director Dr Natalia Kanem and Norway’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Åsmund Aukrust, both of whom joined her on stage.

From pageantry to publishing: Healing through storytelling
Shudu’s second children’s book, I Am Shudu, was released this year and speaks to themes of self-discovery, healing, and confidence. Drawing from her own childhood experiences with bullying and self-doubt, the book delivers a heartfelt message of empowerment for young readers.
“This may be a children’s book, but it freed me,” she wrote in a candid post. “My inner child is no longer afraid. She knows her voice matters. She has boundaries. She has strength.”
Her writing, like her advocacy, blends vulnerability with vision—an honest offering that continues to inspire across age groups.
Honouring African heritage through art and activism
Musida also curated and hosted Drum Dialogue: Beats of Solidarity, a commemorative UN event marking 10 years of the Ark of Return memorial, which honours victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. The event launched the Second International Decade for People of African Descent, a global campaign aimed at recognition, justice, and development.
For Musida, whose roots lie in Limpopo, the moment was deeply personal:
“As an African woman, standing on this stage isn’t just symbolic—it’s a responsibility. Our stories deserve to be heard and honoured.”
A consistent voice for women’s rights
Whether on international panels or in media appearances, Musida continues to push for global reform. In 2023, she appeared on Sky News, calling for an end to female genital mutilation (FGM)—a cause she champions with urgency and compassion.
Despite her packed schedule, she remains deeply committed to humanitarian work. Whether in lecture halls, on camera, or behind a podium, she speaks with clarity, conviction, and heart.
From Limpopo to the world: A legacy in motion
Once subjected to public scrutiny during her Miss SA reign, Shudu has transformed criticism into courage, building a platform rooted in authenticity and impact. Her journey—from a small town in South Africa to Ivy League halls and the global stage—reflects a new kind of leadership.
More than a titleholder, she is a changemaker. And as she continues her studies and advocacy, one thing is clear: Shudu’s story is only just beginning.
