Catherine, Princess of Wales, will not be attending Royal Ascot this year as she continues to focus on her recovery after treatment for cancer. Kensington Palace confirmed the news on Wednesday, stating that the princess is still finding the right balance as she gradually resumes public duties.

A cautious return to royal life
While Catherine has made several appearances in recent weeks — including her much-celebrated return during King Charles III’s official birthday parade — her team has made it clear that she is being careful not to overextend herself. She recently joined the royal family at St George’s Chapel in Windsor and appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony with Prince William and their children.
Even so, she has chosen to step back from one of the most high-profile events on the royal calendar. Royal Ascot is not only a major date in the British sporting season but also a treasured tradition for the royal family. Each day begins with the Royal Procession, followed by races viewed from the exclusive Royal Enclosure, where guests are expected to follow a formal dress code.
‘Disappointed to miss it’
The princess is said to be disappointed that she won’t be attending this year. Known for her love of fashion and her fondness for the event, Catherine has been a familiar face at Ascot over the years, often turning heads with her elegant race-day looks. This year, however, her health remains the priority.
In March 2024, Catherine shared that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy for an undisclosed type of cancer. She later revealed that she was in remission and beginning to ease back into public life.
Now 43, the mother-of-three continues to focus on regaining her strength while supporting her family and royal responsibilities in a more limited capacity.
King Charles to attend despite ongoing treatment
King Charles III, who is also undergoing treatment for cancer, is expected to attend Royal Ascot. The 76-year-old monarch announced his own diagnosis earlier this year and has since returned to public duties, albeit in a reduced capacity. His presence at Ascot will carry extra meaning this year, as it was one of Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite events during her lifetime.
Catherine’s absence is sure to be felt, but her decision reflects a thoughtful and deliberate approach to her recovery. With her trademark grace and sense of duty, the princess continues to set an example, not only as a royal figure but as someone navigating illness with strength and compassion.
