Viewers of hit HBO series The White Lotus were anxiously awaiting the second season finale of the hit show before the episode’s release on Showmax earlier this week. After a body of an unknown guest mysteriously washes up from the Sicilian ocean in the first episode, we’re transported back in time to the first day of guests’ arrival at the exclusive resort, The White Lotus.
The White Lotus S2 focuses on…
There’s no shortage of sex this season round. From love affairs to sex addiction and scandal, the story focuses on how our most carnal desires can drive and impact our lives and relationships with our loved ones, with friends, family and with complete strangers. Especially when we let those desires get the better of us.
In a Youtube clip posted by HBO, Mike White—the show’s creator—speaks about the focus of the second season:
“The first season highlighted money, the second season is all about sex…”
This season, we follow a US-based Italian family visiting Sicily to reconnect with their routes, two married couples vacationing at the luxury resort together, and the main star of the moment, Tanya McQuoid –a billionare heiress visiting Sicily with her husband and assistant in tow.
The cast of the second season welcomes all new characters, starring the likes of Aubrey Plaza, Tom Hollander, Adam DiMarco, and Meghann Fahey. The shining star of both the first and second season though, is 61-year-old Jennifer Coolidge, in her reprised role as Tanya McQuoid.
All eyes on Jennifer Coolidge…
There’s no doubt or dispute about Jennifer’s reign as star of the series. Her character, Tanya, is a rich heiress who enjoys all things lavish in life.
In the first season, Tanya meets her husband, Greg, at an exclusive resort in Hawaii. In the end scene of the final episode of the first season, Tanya is sitting Greg when she says:
“I’ve had every kind of treatment over the years, death is the last immersive experience I haven’t tried…”
Then, in the second season, we’re swept off to Italy where Tanya embraces her inner Monica Vitti, drinking aperitivos and eating big plates of pasta with giant clams, and she’s “just really chic and happy.”
But something’s amiss, and as the season progresses, we become curious to what may be in store for everyone’s favourite lead…
In an interview about casting for the show, creator Mike White says that he loosely based the character around Jennifer Coolidge herself. In his interview, Mike shares that people love Tanya for being this larger than life female archetype. There’s no better way to describe Coolidge’s role on the series. She’s glamorous, she’s fun, she’s clumsy, she’s intuitive and she loves a luxury.
In celebration of the queen behind the role, let’s take a trip back through time, spotlighting some of 61-year-old’s most glamorous and iconic moments:
