Five weeks after her arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence in California, Britney Spears has voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility. Her representative confirmed the news on Sunday, describing the decision as one Spears made of her own accord.
The arrest took place on 4 March in Ventura, California, where Spears, 44, was stopped by the California Highway Patrol after her vehicle was reported driving erratically on the freeway at high speed. She was released the following morning through a cite-and-release process and is due in court on 4 May.
What those close to her have said
In the immediate aftermath of the arrest, Spears’s representative described the incident as “completely inexcusable” while expressing hope that it might mark a turning point. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the statement read at the time.
Her sons, whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline, were said to be spending time with her following the arrest. In his 2025 memoir, Federline had written that he felt it was time to raise the alarm about Spears’s well-being, expressing fear about what might happen if things did not change. Spears’s team responded by saying her children’s well-being was all she cared about.
A long and difficult road
Spears’s journey has been one of the most scrutinised in popular culture for nearly two decades. She was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship in 2008 — which gave her father control over her finances and personal life — and remained under it until a judge terminated the arrangement in November 2021, following years of public campaigning.
In her 2023 memoir, she wrote candidly about the experience and the years of lost freedom it represented. She has since spoken about the ongoing work of healing, acknowledging in 2021 that she still needed significant support.
Her decision to enter treatment voluntarily is being seen by those around her as a meaningful step — one that she has chosen for herself, in her own time.
