South Africa has a new leading lady in one of the biggest shows on television. Netflix and Shondaland have confirmed that East London-born, Cape Town-raised actress Masali Baduza will take the lead in Bridgerton Season 5, playing Michaela Stirling alongside Hannah Dodd’s Francesca Bridgerton. It is a milestone moment for South African representation in global entertainment — and for Baduza, the culmination of a journey that began with a brief appearance in the Season 3 finale.
Best known locally and internationally for her roles in The Woman King and the BBC drama Noughts + Crosses, Baduza has been building steadily toward this moment. She returned for three episodes in Season 4 before being confirmed as a series lead for the upcoming fifth instalment.

The story so far
Season 5 picks up with Francesca Bridgerton re-entering London society two years after the death of her husband, John, with largely practical intentions. That pragmatism is thrown into question when Michaela Stirling — John’s cousin — returns to the city to manage the Kilmartin estate. What follows, if the show’s track record is anything to go by, will be anything but straightforward.
The season consists of eight episodes and is currently in production in London, with showrunner Jess Brownell and executive producer Shonda Rhimes at the helm.
A full-circle celebration
When Season 4 premiered, Baduza celebrated at home in Cape Town surrounded by family and friends — a moment she described on social media as one of profound gratitude. The fact that Season 5 now places her at the very centre of the show’s narrative is a testament to the impression she has made on the production and on audiences.
For South African viewers, it is a rare and exciting thing: one of their own, not in a supporting role or a brief cameo, but carrying the romantic lead of the most-watched period drama on the planet.
