A rare magnum of champagne produced for the 1981 wedding of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer is going under the hammer next month, with an estimate of €67,000 to €80,000.
Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen will offer the bottle of Dom Pérignon Vintage 1961 at a sale on 11 December, describing it as an “extraordinarily rare” piece of royal and wine history.
Dubbed the “Wedding of the Century”, the royal couple married on 29 July 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, followed by a reception at Buckingham Palace. The champagne on offer formed part of a limited-edition wedding release created specifically for the official festivities and selected guests.

Rare Dom Pérignon from a historic vintage
The magnum comes from Dom Pérignon’s 1961 vintage, regarded as one of the house’s most sought-after years.
“Vintage 1961 is one of Dom Pérignon’s most coveted vintages. This special edition was produced in extremely limited numbers and exclusively for the official festivities and selected guests of the royal wedding,” said Thomas Rosendahl, Head of the Wine Department at Bruun Rasmussen.
The bottle was specially disgorged in 1981 for the occasion and fitted with a unique commemorative label marking its connection to the royal wedding.
According to Rosendahl, examples from this release seldom reach the open market.
“This is a champagne created for a historic royal occasion, making it extraordinarily rare. It represents not only a highly esteemed Dom Pérignon vintage but also a unique piece of cultural history. We expect strong international interest from both established wine collectors and royal memorabilia enthusiasts,” he said.
Strong interest expected from collectors
The magnum will be offered with a pre-sale estimate of €67,000 to €80,000, positioning it among the higher-value bottles of champagne seen at recent European auctions.
Bruun Rasmussen said it anticipates bidding from international collectors with an interest in both fine wine and royal provenance, given the enduring fascination with the former royal couple and the status of the 1961 vintage.
The bottle will go under the hammer at Bruun Rasmussen’s auction on 11 December, with further details and catalogue information available via the auction house.
