We’re right in the middle of exam season, and there’s no doubt that this time can shift the energy in a home. Routines are different from normal, stress levels are through the roof, and everyone – students and their parents – is feeling the pressure. Even more so if they’re dealing with final-year or matric learners. That’s why it’s important to create a supportive and calm environment so they can focus. So if you are the parent or relative sharing a home with students, here are simple ways to keep the home steady and encouraging during exam time.
Create and maintain healthy routines
When we think of study time, what comes to mind are late nights, energy drinks and snacking. It might be part of exam culture, but these habits could cause more harm and lead to burnout. Encourage proper sleep patterns, scheduled breaks between study sessions, and hydration. Reduce snacks and prepare nourishing meals such as lean proteins, wholegrains and fruit. The goal is to keep their energy levels stable. Also, encourage family time, like a walk – it keeps them moving but also relieves tension.
Create a calm study environment
This is the time when the whole family needs to work together and make certain compromises. If the home tends to be busy or noisy, set quiet hours where loud music, vacuuming or TV are paused. Also, create a dedicated study area and make it comfortable: a good chair and desk, and proper lighting. Keep the area neat and distraction-free.
Emotional support without the pressure
As the parent or supportive relative, it’s good to check in every now and then; however, try not to overwhelm them with too many questions about their progress. Ask open-ended and easy questions, but trust that they can handle their study load. The key is listening more than you advise – being heard is sometimes the most meaningful form of support.
Lighten the load
Allocate household chores a bit differently if possible. Have a conversation with siblings and other people in the house about sharing responsibilities, making them understand that it’s temporary.
Keep perspective
To conclude, remind the whole household that exams are important and that immediate sacrifices need to be made with a future goal in mind. It fosters a sense of personal responsibility and highlights the importance of family support.
