From high school friends to life partners
Verna and Manie’s love story began years ago in George, where they first met in high school. Although they were friends for a long time, their relationship blossomed only later in life. Verna, who works as an educator, once described their dynamic in an interview with Insider SA, recalling how different their personalities were when they first met.
“He was very shy and quiet, and I’m very bubbly,” she said fondly. Manie, reflecting on their early connection, added: “She caught my eye from the word go. I just wanted to be closer to her.”
Life in the spotlight
Despite the demands of professional rugby and life in the public eye, the couple have embraced their journey with grace. Verna admitted that being married to a Stormers and Springbok player means adapting to constant attention, but she remains grounded. “I love my normal life,” she said. “But obviously, they are in the limelight, so you have to get used to a lot of stuff, especially the media. It can be stressful.”
Over the past year, the Libboks have shared glimpses of their travels, quiet moments at home, and their support for one another through the highs and lows of the rugby season.
As they celebrate their first anniversary, fans have flooded their posts with congratulations, celebrating a love story that has grown from youthful friendship to a lasting partnership.
