A bond fans thought was unbreakable
Nonku and Jojo’s friendship began blossoming during season two of the hit reality series. Their connection quickly deepened, becoming one of the show’s most heartfelt relationships. So close were they that fans began affectionately referring to them as “Joku.” Whether travelling together, opening up during emotional heart-to-hearts or simply sharing everyday moments, their bond seemed to transcend the screen.
However, by season five, something had shifted. Subtle signs of strain became impossible to ignore, and by the time viewers caught wind of Nonku allegedly calling their relationship “surface level,” the dynamic had unravelled entirely. Jojo reportedly cut ties with Nonku shortly after, even blocking her from contacting her directly.
Setting the record straight
Taking to Instagram, Nonku addressed the situation with honesty and vulnerability. She clarified that her use of the phrase “surface level” was never intended to belittle the deep connection she shared with Jojo. According to Nonku, her words were misinterpreted and exaggerated, leading to unnecessary conflict.
“I want to apologise for using the words ‘surface level’ when referring to my friendship with Jojo. In no way was I speaking about the love and bond we share; that was never my intention,” she wrote.
She went on to explain that her recent spiritual journey has caused her to reassess how she navigates certain relationships and the level of openness she maintains in her life. This shift, she says, was not a rejection of Jojo, but rather a step towards more intentional living.

Faith, privacy and personal growth
Nonku revealed that part of her recent growth involves becoming more private, especially as she strengthens her relationship with God. Her desire for discretion, she insists, is not about mistrust or exclusion but about drawing personal boundaries and protecting her peace.
“I was trying to articulate how, as I’ve grown spiritually, there are certain parts of my life I now approach differently. It’s not because I don’t value Jojo or our friendship; in fact, it’s quite the opposite,” she explained.
She also touched on the evolving nature of friendships, noting that not every connection serves the same purpose. Where one friend might be a prayer partner at three in the morning, another may offer laughter and support in other ways. It is these nuances, she says, that were misunderstood.
Hope for reconciliation
Despite the recent distance, Nonku confirmed she has reached out to Jojo and expressed hope for a heart-to-heart conversation in person. She emphasised that she still loves Jojo and is committed to rebuilding what they once had.
“I’ve reached out to her, and we’re planning to meet soon. I want her and everyone to know that our friendship is still important to me, and I’m committed to nurturing it.”
Nonku closed her statement by reaffirming that her spiritual journey is not about cutting people out, but about becoming a better version of herself. Through this growth, she hopes Jojo understands the shift and recognises the enduring value of their friendship.
Whether “Joku” will reunite remains to be seen, but for now, Nonku’s heartfelt message is a reminder that sometimes, growing closer to oneself means learning how to hold space for others in new and quieter ways.
