Johannesburg
Johannesburg has one of those weekends where staying home may require more discipline than going out. From Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September, Sandton, Nasrec and Braamfontein are carrying much of the action, with food, wellness and live music all competing for a place in the diary.
Good Life Show Africa
The Good Life Show takes over the Sandton Convention Centre from Friday to Sunday with a mix of food, wellness, sustainability and conscious-living experiences. Expect product tastings, chef demonstrations, masterclasses and exhibitors spanning plant-based food, clean beauty, home and lifestyle. It is an easy daytime option if you prefer to wander, sample and discover rather than commit to a single stage performance.
The show runs from 10:00 on all three days, closing at 18:00 on Friday and Saturday and 16:00 on Sunday. Tickets are available through Quicket, with online adult tickets listed at R150.
Scorpion Kings Live at FNB Stadium
Saturday belongs to amapiano on a stadium scale as DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small bring Scorpion Kings Live to FNB Stadium. Gates open at 12:00, the pre-show begins at 14:00 and the main show runs from 18:00 into the night, making this a full-day plan rather than a quick concert stop.
Tickets are sold through Webtickets, with the official event information listing entry from R400. If you are heading to Nasrec, plan transport before the afternoon crowds arrive and give yourself enough time for stadium security and entry.
Soweto String Quartet at Untitled Basement
For a gentler Sunday finish, the Soweto String Quartet performs at Untitled Basement in Braamfontein on 20 September. The group’s signature sound brings classical strings together with South African musical traditions, and the intimate venue makes it a very different proposition from Saturday’s stadium energy.
Doors open at 17:00, with the performance scheduled for 19:00. Tickets are R350 through Quicket, with limited reserved seating.
Cape Town
Cape Town’s weekend leans heavily into music too, but the options stretch from a city-centre world-music programme to a three-day outdoor gathering and a Sunday-night R&B concert.
WOMAD Cape Town at Artscape
WOMAD’s Cape Town programme continues across the weekend with performances built around music, cultural exchange and storytelling. Friday brings a Korean Culture Concert at Artscape, while Saturday includes the New Generations Concert in the afternoon and the Desmond Tutu United 4 Humanity Peace Concert at 20:00.
Some programme events are free, while ticketed performances are available via Webtickets. The Saturday afternoon New Generations Concert is listed at R100 and the evening peace concert at R150.
Earthdance Cape Town
If your ideal weekend involves leaving the city behind, Earthdance Cape Town runs from 18 to 20 September at Kromrivier Farm between Greyton and Riviersonderend. The three-day gathering combines electronic music, workshops, camping and the global Prayer for Peace link-up, with general camping included in festival tickets.
Tickets are sold through Quicket. Organisers also scheduled paid shuttle options from Green Point for festival-goers who did not want to drive out to the farm.
Kenny Lattimore at GrandWest
Sunday evening brings a change of pace as American R&B singer Kenny Lattimore performs at the Grand Arena, GrandWest. The one-night show starts at 17:00 and draws on a catalogue built around polished soul and love songs, including the material that has made him a long-standing favourite with R&B audiences.
Tickets are available through Webtickets, with Cape Town Tourism listing prices from R990.
One weekend, several moods
Whether you want a slow Sunday concert, a stadium-sized Saturday or a full weekend away from the city, 18 to 20 September has enough range to build plans around your mood rather than simply whatever is closest. Book ahead where possible, check event pages before leaving home and give yourself extra travel time for the bigger venues.
