Enjoy The Last Warm Days With A Picnic

There are two much-needed public holidays coming up, namely Freedom Day on 27 April and Worker’s Day on 2 May, so if you feel like getting outdoors and appreciating the simple things in life, we can’t imagine anything better than an autumn picnic in the best natural setting.

Picnic in the garden

We’re blessed with beautiful botanical gardens throughout the country, from Walter Sisulu in Gauteng to Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch as well as gems in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.

If you’re keen on spending a day out, the botanical gardens are magnificent in the afternoon light.

Pack a wholesome picnic of your favourite comfort food and a bottle of smooth red wine and spread out on the vast green lawns – this might be the last time to get outside before the cold sets in.

There are nine wonderful gardens scattered throughout the country, so no matter where you are, you’ll have a splendid spot to spend your day off.

Movie-picnic under the stars

For something a bit different, try an outdoor movie treat at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. The Galileo Open Air Cinema will be airing classic favourite The Sound of Music on 27 April at 7:45pm, and it’s bound to be a wonderful night out.

It’s one of the last shows of the season, so, if you haven’t been to a movie beneath the stars, now’s your chance. Snuggle under a blanket, popcorn and candy floss in hand, and sit back to enjoy a romantic evening.

You can create your own picnic with the delicious food available from stalls at the venue – think heart-warming paella, burgers and pizza.

If you don’t make it to The Sound of Music, there’s one last showing before the weather becomes prohibitive.

Keeping with well-loved musicals, West Side Story is airing on 28 April at the V&A Waterfront; you might have to bring tissues for this one! For ticket prices and event details, visit thegalileo.co.za
