Is your deodorant no longer doing its job? Issues such as hormonal imbalances, product choice and application habits might be to blame. Here’s what to know and how to fix it.

You may have noticed that your favourite deodorant just stopped keeping odours in check. Even if you use it regularly, you may find you keep having to reapply throughout the day or you may be prompted to choose another product altogether. But is the problem the deodorant itself, or is there another cause?
Your body’s chemistry may have changed
When bacteria on the skin breaks down substances in sweat, that’s when body odour develops. Sweat itself basically has no odour but the interaction between sweat and skin bacteria produces an unpleasant smell.
Hormonal issues such as perimenopause and menopause can affect sweating. Then there’s stress, certain medication and other health changes that all influence how much you sweat and how your body smells.
You might need a different formula
Underarm products don’t all work in the same way. Deodorants mask or reduce body odour, but antiperspirants contain formulas that temporarily reduce sweat reduction.
If sweating is your main concern, switch to an antiperspirant. However, if you’re already using one, make sure the formula exactly suits your skin and needs. Try a fragrance-free product option if you have sensitive underarms.
Check your routine
It’s not advised to apply deodorant to damp or sweaty underarms – it affects how well certain products work. Wash your underarms with a gentle cleanser and dry them thoroughly before applying your products.
If using an antiperspirant, apply it to completely dry skin before bed for improved effectiveness. Follow the product instructions especially if you have sensitive skin.
Then remember to wash your clothes regularly. Bacteria, sweat and product residue can stick to clothing, particularly with tight-fitting garments, contributing to persistent odours.
When to see a doctor
You don’t have to change product brands immediately when your deodorant suddenly stops working. Begin by reviewing your routine and consider recent changes in your hormones, stress levels and medication.
But remember to consult a doctor if you develop unusual symptoms or a rash, and your body odour persists despite good hygiene. Notice if you’re experience excessive sweating as well. It may indicate an underlying health issue.
Ultimately, you have to understand your needs in order to find the right product. A small adjustment to your routine may be all you need to feel fresh and confident again.
