With harsh winds, low humidity, and chilly temperatures out to wreak havoc on our skin, the colder months can often end up stripping the skin’s barrier, leading to dryness, redness and irritation. The key to maintaining healthy and resilient skin during this time is to focus on restoring and strengthening your skin barrier.
We’re taking proactive steps to restore and fortify the skin barrier against harsh elements so we can face winter with confidence and healthy-looking, radiant skin:
1. Gentle cleansing
Start your skincare routine with a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away essential oils from your skin. Look for a hydrating cleanser that cleanses without compromising your skin’s natural moisture barrier. Avoid hot water, as it can further dehydrate your skin. Opt for lukewarm water instead.
2. Hydration is key
Moisturising is crucial, especially during colder months when the air tends to be drier. Choose a rich, emollient moisturiser that provides intense hydration. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, which help lock in moisture and strengthen your skin barrier.
3. Exfoliate mindfully
Exfoliation is essential for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover, but be cautious not to overdo it, especially in colder weather. Opt for a mild exfoliant with ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to slough away dead skin cells gently. Aim to exfoliate no more than 2-3 times a week to avoid irritating your skin.
4. Add a protective layer
Consider incorporating an occlusive or barrier cream into your routine. These products form a protective layer on the skin, preventing moisture loss and shielding your skin from harsh environmental factors. 6. Sunscreen is non-negotiable
Don’t let the winter chill fool you – harmful UV rays are still present, even on cloudy days. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, focusing on exposed areas. UV rays can damage your skin barrier, leading to premature ageing and increased sensitivity.
7. Stay hydrated
Healthy skin starts from within. Drink plenty of water and consume a balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Foods like fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids contribute to overall skin health, helping your skin stay resilient in the face of colder temperatures.
