One of the issues that we often deal with as we age are those prominent lines that form on the sides of the nose running downwards to the chin. While we can’t really do anything about them, we can apply some clever make-up tips to marionette lines appear softer and lifted.

The creases that run from the corner of mouth down towards the chin are called marionette lines. They naturally occur as we age as the skin loses elasticity and firmness. Now there’s nothing wrong with having them, but if you feel they’re a bit too prominent than you’d like, there are a few make-up hacks to make them look more lifted and smoother.
Hydrate your skin
Dehydrated or dry skin tends to emphasise texture and lines, which affects how make-up sits on the surface. Start with a nourishing moisturiser and hydrating primer. These products create a smoother canvas so that foundation won’t settle into lines and creases.
Choose lightweight complexion products
Heavy foundation tends to draw attention to marionette lines because they collect in the folds of the skin. Instead opt for a lightweight foundation that’s luminous, or a skin tint that evens out the complexion without looking cakey.
Also apply foundation very sparingly around the mouth although it may feel counterintuitive. Blend well with a damp sponge. Build foundation only where needed to maintain a natural finish.
Be strategic with concealer
Concealer is used to brighten the face but too much around marionette lines can do the opposite. Use a small amount of concealer outside the shadow created by the line instead of directly inside the line. This diffuses darkness and creates the illusion of smoother skin.
Lift with blush and bronzer
Placement is key. Apply your blush a tad higher and blend upward towards the temples to draw the eye upwards. Same with bronzer – sweep along the upper cheekbones rather than low on the face so that downward angles are not accentuated.
Go easy on the powder
Powder can emphasise fine lines. Use only light dusting where necessary and only focus in spot that become oily. Leave the mouth and chin more radiant to help the skin look more youthful and fresher.
Finish with a setting spray
A hydrating spray will meld the make-up into the skin, reducing the appearance of texture and preventing products from settling into throughout the day.
