Beauty is one of the easiest places to overspend once the deals start. Before you start shopping, it helps to know which beauty items to budget for this Black Friday sale. That way, your money goes towards products you’ll use up, not ones that sit in a drawer.

Start with what you’re running out of
Before you look at a single deal, check your bathroom shelf and makeup bag. Is your moisturiser nearly empty? Are you on your last bit of foundation? Everyday items you’ll finish anyway are the safest things to buy in a sale, because you know you’ll use them. Write a short list and keep to it.
Skincare
Cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen are the ones to put first. You use them daily, so a good discount adds up over the months. Check the expiry date and the size before you buy, and make sure it’s a product your skin already likes. A sale is not the time to try a brand-new serum that might not suit you.
Makeup
If you have a base product you’ve used for years, a sale is the perfect time to get another one. Because you already know your shade and how it wears, there is little risk of wasting money. Leave out shades or formulas you haven’t tested. They may look great online, but they can end up unused.
Fragrance
Perfume is one of the biggest savings of the season. And Black Friday often overlaps with early Christmas shopping, so it’s a good time to buy a gift too. If you already have a favourite scent, now is the time to get it for less. Gift sets can be good value as well, but only if you’d use everything inside.
Hair tools
Hair dryers, straighteners and curlers are expensive, and they are often marked down during the sale. If yours is old or struggling, put one of these on your list. Look for the same model you’ve researched, rather than choosing on price alone. A cheaper tool that damages your hair is not a bargain.
What to skip
Be careful with anything you’re buying only because it’s cheap. Large multipacks, trend products and makeup in colours you never wear are the usual traps. If you wouldn’t buy it at full price, a discount doesn’t make it a good idea.
Set a limit before you shop
Decide on a total amount before you start, and stick to it. Keeping your list on your phone helps you stay focused when the offers keep coming. If something isn’t on the list, give it a day. Many deals last more than a single day, and some come back before Christmas.
Black Friday can be a great way to stock up on the beauty items you love for less. The trick is to shop with a plan, so you end up with products you’ll enjoy, not a pile you regret.
