In 2022, we’re used to people garnering social media fame for all kinds of reasons (some of which can make us do a double-take at the best of times).
In the cracks of a world obsessed with fillers, filters and life as an Instagram Highlight Reel, a refreshing dose of substance emerges every once in a while, and the youngest female PhD graduate in Africa is exactly that – refreshing.
Social media has recently lit up in praise for Dr Musa Donia Saurombe, who has recently been made an associate professor at the University of Johannesburg, and for good reason.
In her early twenties (at just 23 years old) the doc earned her PhD Philosophy in Industrial Psychology. No, that isn’t a typo. At a time when the human brain hasn’t even fully developed, Dr Musa was investigating how it develops and why.
Her journey has earned the young Zimbabwean numerous awards, including the 2018 Class of 100 Most Influential Young Africans and an Award of Honour at the BRICS International Forum.
A societal mover and shaker, Dr Musa is also known for her work as a “civic innovator” with a focus on women and the youth, as UJ expresses.
Now as a Senior Lecturer, Dr Musa, or Prof Musa has seen viral acclaim online with some commenting “we need many like you.”
Her recent appointment at UJ is nothing short of the kind of inspiration we need to talk about more in SA, shining a spotlight on how women and particularly black women are paving the path of people for little girls to look up to.
