Sleek is out, kitsch is in. While minimalist spaces might still have their spot on the radar for 2024, colourful interiors with loads of character are taking over, especially in the heart of the home – the kitchen. Or rather, kitschen.
Here are 6 ways to incorporate kitsch into your kitchen with style:
1. Colour is key
The first element that stands out about a true kitschen, is its colour. Colour makes character, and that’s what we’re going for with this trend.
We’re doing away with clean, minimalist shades. Instead, we’re painting cabinets with a rich lick of colour, and leaving natural wood exposed where we can – bonus points if the natural wood is a little worn, adding a vintage feel.
A tiled backsplash or walls give the opportunity to introduce even more character through colour – think forest greens, and deep orange/red tiling. Or a mix!
2. Vintage all the way
Vintage pieces are main characters in a kitschen.
Incorporating vintage furniture items such as a table and a set of chairs to the room adds an inviting sense of warmth. You’re going for the well-worn wooden table with ’60s rattan dining chairs, or painted wooden ones. The older your table, the more charm it will add to your kitchen.
Other simple vintage touches could be patterned chair pads, colourful vases, old biscuit tins, bowls and crockery sets displayed on open shelves or countertops – this trend can be very forgiving, so a touch a clutter may actually work in your favour.
3. Low hanging lights and lamps
If you’re committed to the kitschen trend, you’re not going for cold, bright overhead lights.
To create a softer atmosphere, you’ll want to look for hanging light fixtures with some character to them, or warm lamps that can be added to surfaces to add an extra bit of colour and texture to the area.
4. Gallery wall
A gallery wall is your key adding the ‘kitschen’ character to your space.
You’ll need a good collection of colourful artworks and prints with unique painted wooden frames for character. To add to the ‘kitsch’ feel, look for a set of hand-painted display plates, or raid the thrift store for tinier artworks that could work together to form a larger gallery wall.
5. Pretty ceramics
The final touches of your kitschen will include pretty, colourful ceramics that you’ll leave on the counters. Look for deep, earthy-toned slipware, the timeless red/orange enamel bread bin, and bits of traditional French cutlery.
