In a region where progress never sleeps, the lifeline of our economy and well-being is under constant pressure. Gauteng’s water demand is rising, and the urgency to protect this finite resource has never been greater. In response, Rand Water, in partnership with national and municipal bodies, is spearheading a transformative water conservation campaign.
This initiative is more than just a series of warnings; it is a call to action for every resident to become “Water Wise.” By focusing on education and behavioural change, the campaign empowers citizens to make small, impactful shifts in their daily routines to ensure environmental sustainability for generations to come.

The power of small changes
The campaign highlights that significant water savings frequently start with simple household maintenance and smarter technology. Every drop truly counts when you consider the collective impact of our daily habits:
- Up to 15 litres of water can be wasted every day by a single leak that releases one drop every second.
- Long-term water conservation and cost savings are achieved by installing low-flow restrictors or water aerators on taps.
- Making the switch to a dual-flush toilet guarantees that each flush uses only 4–9 litres of water.
- Standard showerhead models utilise 10–18 litres per minute; a water-efficient showerhead uses only 6–10 litres.

Sustainable outdoor & lifestyle habits
Preserving our water resources extends beyond the bathroom and kitchen. The campaign encourages a “Water Wise” approach to outdoor maintenance and general chores:
- Keeping your lawn at least 2 cm long keeps the soil from drying out in the sun and helps the roots grow deeper, which means your lawn needs less water to stay green.
- Never use a hosepipe to clean your car; always use a bucket and wash it on the grass.
- People should only wash full loads of clothes to save time, money, and water.
- If you’d rather take a bath than a shower, don’t fill the tub more than 20 cm deep.

A collective responsibility
This campaign aligns closely with the Department of Water and Sanitation’s national efforts to foster a culture of conservation. By adopting these simple habits, we don’t just save water—we save money and protect the future of Gauteng.
