Making friends as an adult is undeniably harder. Between demanding careers, household responsibilities and raising children, who has the time? Women have always carried the invisible load. There’s pressure to keep the household together, nurture families and climb the corporate ladder, all while trying to maintain a social life.
The busy years, the thirties and forties, are when this pressure peaks. Careers are at their most demanding. Children, if they are in the picture, require constant attention. Ageing parents may need care. And somewhere in between, there is supposed to be time for friends.

Why childhood friendships were easier
It’s tempting to rely on the friends who have known us forever. But life happens. People move to different cities, emigrate to other countries, get married, or simply drift into different life stages. That is why, when asked who our best friend is, most of us still name a high school or university friend. It was easier back then. We were in the same room every day, bonded over shared classes and similar interests.
That does not mean we need to replace a best friend who now lives in another country. Making casual, everyday friends can be just as rewarding. We just have to try.
The power of female friendship
Friendship in this season of life
Friendship in the busy years does not have to look like it did in high school or university. It can be squeezed between other responsibilities, and that is okay. What matters is showing up when it counts. A voice note to check in. A quick coffee between drop-off and work. A simple ‘thinking of you’ text. These small moments are what build real friendships over time.
The women who thrive in this season are the ones who let go of perfection and accept that life is full. They know that friendship does not have to be perfect to be meaningful. And remember, it is never too late to start building those meaningful connections.
