Black Friday started out in America, where the day after Thanksgiving was seen as the first day of the end-of-year shopping season.

It’s become synonymous with crazy shopping deals and even crazier shoppers fighting their way into stores in the States.

Luckily, South Africans tend to be a more sedate when it comes to Black Friday, but expect some long queues.

Black Friday sales online

If the idea of braving the stores when everyone’s in a Black Friday frenzy is a bit too much for you to handle, you might want to stick to clicks rather than queues.

Takealot’s Black Friday deals go live at 12:01AM. As with previous years, the Blue Dot Sale will not only be offered on Black Friday. Sales will continue all weekend including Cyber Monday (27 November) and Takealot Tuesday (28 November). Shoppers who have downloaded the Takealot.com app will be able shop selected app-only Blue Dot deals earlier in the week.

Zinio is having a 40% off Black Friday sale on magazine subscriptions until next Friday.

Superbalist.com is having a four-day mega sale from 24 to 27 November. The sale will include major discounts on big names and leading brands – from G-Star through to Missguided and Cotton On.

Spree is also offering exclusive info on its sales if you sign up to a newsletter. You can also win a R250 shopping voucher if you sign up for 23 November.

Makro is giving people who download the store’s app early access to Black Friday deals.

SwiitchBeauty will offer up to 50% off all products retailing during its Pink Friday Sale. This means everything available online will be priced at R299 and below. The Pink Friday Sale will run from Black Friday until Sunday, 26 November .

Contempo is offering 50% off the lowest priced item when you buy two.

Designer JJ Schoeman will be turning his entire Rosebank store into a Black Friday sale, so you could get a designer dress at a ridiculous price!

Totalsports will be giving shoppers R200 off selected Puma Eslu and Adidas Superstars footwear. You’ll also get R600 off Converse All Star footwear, as well as 20-50% off selected sales apparel.

Execuspecs will be offering 40% off all sunglasses for one day only on Black Friday.

Topshop is giving shoppers 30% off selected lines.

Checkers is once again taking part in the sale madness, and is also offering people who sign up for their mailer an opportunity to win a VIP Black Friday experience where you’ll be given a R5 000 voucher to shop for deals online.

Boardmans, Edgars, and Red Square have all also gone the “sign up for our newsletter” for info route, but at least we know they are taking part.

Clicks is offering people who sign up to their Black Friday Facebook event early access to exclusive deals and information. The store is cheekily saying “no mails” in the event details – obviously they’re referring to the “sign up” method their competitors are going for.

Pick n Pay and Cardies have also created Facebook events for their Black Friday events.
