In South Africa, we’ve been in quite a strict lockdown for a little over a week now. But, in many other countries all over the world, they’re heading into their fourth or fifth week of isolation. And, it’s safe to say, the experience has inspired some weird and wonderful behaviour. So, we thought, when faced with a fair amount of negative news and terrifying statistics, why not celebrate some of the simpler – and more amusing – human stories? Because, even in these unprecedented times, the strength of the human spirit is quite something.
Here are some quirky stories to keep you smiling during lockdown…
The Aussi Zoo Keeper With Killer Moves
During the first few weeks of Australia’s isolation period, the beautiful Melbourne Zoo decided to live-stream footage from their animals’ enclosures to keep viewers entertained. While there was interesting footage of elephants, lions and tigers, it wasn’t a four-legged animal that stole the show. This zoo keeper took the opportunity to show off his dancing talents – and make us smile.
John Krasinski’s New News Channel
As if we didn’t already have an enormous soft spot for this hilarious and dapper actor. A few days ago, the charming star of The Office launched his ‘official’ news channel, right from the comfort of his own home. And with the very professional sign created by his daughters, Hazel and Violet. Already, he’s conducted several excellent interviews – look out for the one with his co-star Steve Carell – and compiled Some (very) Good News items from around the world. This is one to follow.
A Marathon With A Lockdown Twist
We’re all feeling a bit stifled, especially with one of our lockdown rules stipulating that we can’t go for runs, jogs, or walks with the dogs. And, the more physically active among us are feeling the strain. So, a solution presented itself in the form of the brilliantly South African Mzansi Lockdown Marathon Challenge. And, already, many of us are taking up the task of completing a 42.2km marathon across our 21 days of isolation. Whether you run in your garden, on your patio, or through the house, this is bound to keep you active and inspired.
Djs Keeping Us Dancing
If you’re missing the thrills of a night out, some innovative entertainers have come to the rescue. There have been several reports of Djs all over the world live-streaming their sets, while still encouraging social dis-dancing (get it). One of the biggest and most-watched videos at the moment is of a balcony rave in Amsterdam. But, locally, the likes of Cape Town-based DJ Sox are also coming to the party. Time to turn the living room into a dance floor?
Take A Virtual Game Drive
It’s clear we’re craving a bit of adventure, as this wonderfully South African meme shows…
But, it’s no longer necessary to set up fluffy toys in your drive way.
For most South Africans, the bush holds a special place in our hearts. And being stuck at home can really make you long for a weekend in nature’s wide open spaces with nothing but warthogs and hornbills for company. With this in mind, the Kruger National Park is doing two virtual game drives a day on the YouTube channel WildEarth.
You can ask rangers questions, enjoy your cup of bush coffee as you tour the veld and – most importantly – see some really interesting sights. The morning drive starts at 5.30am and there’s an afternoon drive at 3.30pm. Below is one of the rarest sightings – happy spotting!
And lastly, a lockdown summary…
The delightful Ryan Reynolds has compiled a video of some of the best news to come out of the coronavirus crisis and quarantine. Just to sum things up… get the tissues ready.
We’re sure there are many more local and international stories like this, so if there are any you want to share, please let us know. Here’s to a safe, happy and sane lockdown!
