The holiday season calls for relaxation, unwinding and time off. For a lot of people, it is the most wonderful time of the year because they get to let down their hair for a couple of days (or sometimes even weeks). But with so many occasions to look forward to, it can also be a lot to deal with (when it comes to your fashion cupboard). If you are a little unsure about the rules of the season, have a look at our do’s and don’ts guide!
Bold and statement jewellery
The bigger the statement it, the better. A bold piece of jewellery will make even the simplest outfit look amazing. Go big and bright with your accessories, there are no boundaries! Earrings, R349, Accessorize. Necklace, R49, Mr Price.
You’ve heard it before… for a more classic look, cleverly reveal and conceal. If you want to show a little leg, go for a high neck or a sleeved dress. If you want to show off your shoulders, go for a dress with a lower hemline. Off-shoulder dress, R1 199, 4 to 16, Forever New. Sleeved dress, R499, 6 to 20, Foschini.
Metallic and Sequins
A sequins suit might be a bit too much for you, but a metallic top or sequins bottom paired with a neutral piece will turn heads in a good way! Metallic Skirt, R899, Zara. Sequins top, R224, 30 to 38, Style Republic at Superbalist.
Ignore the dress code!
If you’re invited to a party, honour the host by dressing appropriately. You don’t want to wear jeans to a black tie party or a ball gown to a beach-themed get together.
Wear uncomfortable heels
A party usually lasts more than just a couple of hours, so be prepared. Wear a pair of heels that won’t let you down (or drive you to tears before the end of the night) or pack flats. You can also add gel cushions inside your shoes to help you survive the night. Heels, R999, Aldo. Gel cushions, R57, Clicks.
Forget to spend a little extra time
This is the perfect time to try that red lip or hairstyle you never have enough time for. Just a few extra minutes will go a long way. You want to look a little more special than you usually do; after all, it is party season! Lipstick, R250, MAC Cosmetics. Hairclip, R199, Accessorize.
