How to Wear Cruise Couture to the Durban July

The much anticipated Vodacom Durban July takes place this weekend at the Greyville Racecourse where A-listers and fashionistas will strut their stuff.

Ahead of the big day, top local fashion designers created their interpretations of the 2015 theme, “The Captain’s Table”.

The array of nautical-inspired “Cruise Couture” on display was truly fabulous. Our Fashion Ed picks her top five looks and tells you how to translate these into your race day outfit.

Golden African Princess

Terrence Bray’s striking designs were a commentary on the slave trade and featured golden and sandy tones. Get the look with corsets, puff sleeves, neutral hues and bronze make-up.

Glam Fascination

Durban designer Haroun Hansrot took inspiration from a vintage high tea at the Captain’s Table. Copy his elegant designs by wearing pearls, feathers, brocade and fringing. Finish the look with a neat chignon and a statement fascinator.

Get knotted

Sibu Msimang had a different take on the nautical theme creating her looks with macramé – a knotting technique used by sailors. Channel her style by pairing bold black with flesh-coloured tones. Go for a flattering midi hem line either falling just above, at or below the knees. Lengthen your legs with high heels and carry a statement clutch

Silver seas

Colleen Eitzen took her inspiration from the waves with silver sequins and satin. Get her laid-back glam look with long asymmetrical tops over layered chiffon skirts or smarten it up with cigarette pants paired with a cinched in brocade jacket.

Monochrome magic

Nothing is as chic on race day as black and white. Rubicon’s Hangwani Nengowhela went with an opulent 1920’s interpretation. Get the luxe look with ruffles, pearls and red lips.

Pieces of eight

Design duo McCarthy & Wolff created ethereal dresses around the theme of sunken treasure. Add interest to your race day outfit with gilded details, golden hues and flowing skirts. Finish the look with dark lips and nails.
