As they always say, fashion comes and fashion goes…and just like everything else in this world, we’ve got to adjust to the times. After 2021 brought us COVID-19, we all got back into the flow of ‘normal’ again this year. Well, basically…bar a few fashion trends that won’t be joining us for 2023.
Fashion trends are generally influenced by the Western world, and because of our opposing seasons, we generally hop on to the trend months later than the rest of the world.
When it comes to fashion in Africa, we’ve solidified a voice in the fashion community and we’re still well on our way to building a formidable fashion rep in Africa.
However, we won’t always get it right…let’s have a look at some of the trends we are leaving in 2022:
The skinny tight fit
Skinny jeans have been all the buzz for the last couple of years. Showing off thighs and calf muscles, skinny jeans did all they needed to when it came to flaunting shape. However, the baggy fit is where we’re going now. Perhaps you don’t have to get rid of all your skinnies, but at least invest in a couple of baggy fits for the new year.
Comfort first
2020 was definitely the year that changed the world and how we live. One of the biggest changes was how we dress.
We opted for comfort first, and loungewear was everybody’s go-to. But now, with eeryone back at the office, at least in a hybrid work model, we need to put those loungewear to the back of the wardrobe, queen. The world is back up and running, and we have to show up and look the part!
Fast Fashion
We could probably speak about how bad fast fashion is for the environment over and over again, but truth be told it will take a while for the world to completely get rid of it.
2022 introduced an ode to sustainable fashion ways of producing clothes and that trend is only growing. It’s time to invest in a wardrobe that requires less but is more interseasonal, more basic, and investment pieces that will last for years to come.
Neutral tones
Yes, neutral tones on garments give longevity, as they can be paired with anything.
Since the pandemic ended, we’ve returned back to our ‘normal’ programming, and colour has been so representative of our newfound excitement to be out and about again. Bold colours are fun and exciting so leave the neutrals in the back of the cupboard and add some pops of colour for the new year!
Mid lengths
Is it too long? Is it too short? this is probably a question asked more often than not.
The midi skirt or midi dress is something most women opt for because it is considered a safe option, a more conservative one, perhaps.
That however, is something we are leaving in 2022. Short-short skirts are a trend, you have to be intentional about the length, it’s either going to be short, or long, but in 2023, the midi length just won’t work.
