The South African design house, Carrol Boyes, best known for turning the objects we live with into functional art, is taking its well-loved design language out of the home and onto the street with a new collection of leather handbags.
Although “new” only tells half the story. Long before Carrol Boyes became synonymous with sculptural homeware, leather goods formed part of Carrol’s original creative vision. Bags offered her another means for functional art: something personal, practical and designed to move through the day-to-day with its owner.

The Heritage, Reimagined.
Now, under the creative direction of her niece Caro Boyes, that early idea has been picked up and carried forward. The collection revisits three sculptural motifs from the Carrol Boyes archive — Diver, Toe Touch and Cradle — reinterpreting each through contemporary silhouettes and top-grain leather. Rather than simply decorating the bags, the sculptures become integral to their design. They fasten, hold, punctuate and define them.
Diver, once seen as a zipper pull and handle detail on Carrol’s early leather pieces, takes centre stage as a magnetic closure across contemporary Flap Bags and a compact Phone Pouch. Caught mid-motion, the figure brings its familiar sense of fearlessness and grace to pieces designed to move from day into evening.
Toe Touch strikes a different pose. The sculptural figure reaches forward across a structured cream Chain Purse, becoming its magnetic closure. A detachable chain transforms the piece from shoulder bag to clutch; equally at home with tailoring, an evening dress or a casual look.

Then there is Cradle. Dating back to one of Carrol’s earliest leather pieces in 2004, the abstract, embracing form returns with a decidedly contemporary look. On compact Phone Pouches, it appears as sculptural studding, while the collection’s hero Studded Slouch Bag repeats the motif across soft taupe leather.
Relaxed in silhouette but considered in construction, the Slouch Bag expands when more room is required and is designed to sit comfortably on the shoulder.
Design, Considered For Everyday.
A handbag is asked to do more than almost anything else in a wardrobe. The new Carrol Boyes collection was designed with this in mind. These aren’t bags waiting for a special occasion. They are designed for coffee runs and dinner reservations, airport lounges and gallery openings, working days and weekends that develop plans of their own. The neutral palette of black, taupe and cream makes them easy to style; the sculptural hardware makes them difficult to overlook.

And perhaps that is what gives the collection its particular appeal. The modern “it bag” needn’t shout its name across the room. It can say something more interesting about the person carrying it. Here, heritage becomes hardware, sculpture becomes function, and craftsmanship becomes something you can sling over your shoulder.
As Caro Boyes puts it: “I wanted to take our sculptural design language beyond the home, creating art you can carry.”
The new Carrol Boyes Leather Handbag Collection launched on 6 October 2026 and is now available online and at Carrol Boyes stores across South Africa.
