The superstar opens up about how she achieves balance and what makes her truly happy…
I love trying new things and doing stuff that’s worlds apart from anything I’ve done before. For instance, I may not be the best singer in the room, but I’ll have fun trying!
I’ve started to think very differently since becoming a mother. I feel so much stronger now because I’m aware that I have a greater responsibility in life. Acting is hard work but looking into your child’s eyes, even after she’s kept you up all night, isn’t at all a strain. It’s the most wonderful thing.
I adore cooking. It’s a real passion of mine and I do it a lot at home. I’m getting quite good at making Thai food. Italian cuisine has always been another favourite of mine.
I’m just really enjoying my life and the way my career seems to be evolving. I don’t find myself suffering with very much anxiety anymore, and I’m not worrying about when the next job will come around. It’s lovely.
I don’t want to have to maintain external youth. As an actress, people expect me to look perfect, wear the latest designs and be at my best. But sometimes I just want to wear a T-shirt and jeans and go to the supermarket or to a coffee shop and read a book or magazine. There’s so much pressure in the acting business to look young, It’s as if women aren’t supposed to age.
As much as possible, John and I try to avoid talking about business when we’re at home. I think it’s important to spend time with your friends and the people you love, and chat about things other than work. You have to let your mind expand… and relax!
I don’t like having a plan, I love not having a schedule. It’s the best waking up in the morning and not knowing what I might do.
Motherhood has been the most wonderful experience and it’s changed me in so many ways. With acting, you often find yourself jumping from one job to the next, not thinking too much about your personal life. I want to spend more time with my husband and children now, so it’s not so easy for me to do one film after the other.
