Social media is buzzing with news from this year’s celebrated Cannes Film Festival – from fashion hits to film debuts.
Here’s our pick of the film nominees you should look out for:
The talented Nicole Kidman heads up a (largely) female cast in this gripping thriller set in the American Civil War. When an injured enemy soldier seeks refuge in an all-girls’ boarding school, his presence in the house causes quite a stir. It’s teeming with sexual tension and atmosphere. Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and the charming Colin Farrell also star.

A thought-provoking tale about a young girl who risks her life to save her best friend – a ‘super-pig’ named Okja. This will have many audience members switching to a veggie diet as Okja is portrayed as a delightful pet. With another all-star cast featuring Tilda Swinton as CEO Lucy Mirando, Jake Gyllenhaal as a quirky zoologist, and Lily Collins and Paul Dano as animal right activists, this is one to watch.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell are proving to be a formidable duo at this year’s festival, together again in this psychological thriller by The Lobster director, Yorgos Lanthimos. Farrell plays a distinguished surgeon whose life is turned upside down when he tries to help a teenage boy. Irish actor Barry Keoghan stars as the troubled boy, Martin.
You Were Never Really Here
Based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Ames, this moving mystery drama stars award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix as a dishevelled war veteran, Joe. When he tries his best to rescue a young girl from a sex trafficking ring in Manhattan, his life is thrown into turmoil.
In the Fade
The plot for this German drama is being kept firmly under wraps, and all we know is that it centres on the story of Katja Sekerci (Diane Kruger) who is on a path of revenge after her husband and son are killed in a bomb attack. Knowing only this, we’re still interested!
