The spirited war cries of South African schools have reached global recognition, with boys’ schools like Wynberg Boys High School in Cape Town and St David’s in Johannesburg already having gained viral fame.
Now, an all-girls high-school in Pretoria has drawn attention for its lively Bella Ciao cry.
Pupils from the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool took the spotlight on TikTok after SA rugby team, Blue Bulls, shared a video of their now widely viewed school war cry – a rendition of Bella Ciao.
The tune was first an Italian protest folk song, before it was remixed and then used as a trending ‘sound’ on social media.
Netizens have flocked to the comments section of the TikTok video, which has amassed over 340, 000 views, sharing their take on the all-girls war cry.
As per Briefly, the Afrikaans high school is the sister school of Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool for boys. The institution educates a total of 1 200 Afrikaans students.
