One determined couple, Tania and Jacques De Kock, have embarked on a 1000km journey, running from Cape Town to Mpumalanga in order to raise funds for CANSA. The journey started six years ago in 2016, when Jacques’ father passed away from throat cancer. In honour of Jacques’ dad — nicknamed ‘Pa Billy’ —the couple started running to raise awareness and make a difference.
Now, the couple have made a name for themselves running races across SA, and have started their own cause called the Running Turtles for others to join the initiative and support CANSA.
The goal for the Running Turtles this year is to run 1000km and raise R100, 000 through the GivenGrain platform. For every R50 that is raised, the couple will run 1km along their trip and once they have reached the end-line, they plan on running the Meiringspoort half marathon.
With the pair already having raised just under R25, 000 they have about R75 500 more to raise. Currently the Running Turtles are on a road trip with Jacques mom and plan to run a distance every day. The pair will end up a long way away from where they come from in Cape Town, as they approach the finish outside of Kruger National Park.
The couple are enjoying the South African scenery along the way and have had the joy of revisiting the Panorama Route – a stretch of Mpumalanga’s country where Pa Billy visited with his wife in 2012. The trio have been stopping at various spots where Pa Billy visited in 2012.
