Looking for the most effective products for your skin type? To help get you started, Herbalife Nutrition shares five common and necessary skincare ingredients to start incorporating into your skincare routine…
Although not necessarily classified as an ‘ingredient’ itself, using a product that contains ample sun protection is one of the best preventative measures you can take for your skin. In the long run, harmful UV rays lead to photo-ageing, which refers to the premature ageing of your skin due to repeated exposure to UV radiation. In essence, using sunscreen actually slows down the ageing process.
For more sensitive skin, opt for a mineral-based sunscreen that contains titanium oxide or zinc oxide for UVA and UVB protection without any irritation.
A group of natural and synthetic ingredients that protect the skin against environmental stressors and aggressors, such as free radicals and pollution. Most derive from fruits and vegetables, but some are created in laboratories.
Antioxidants can be used at every age and work via different pathways to shield our skin from different types of environmental threats. Popular antioxidants include vitamins E and C, lycopene, green tea and niacinamide.
3. Essential Oils
Beautifully fragranced plant extracts with various skin benefits and aromatherapeutic properties. Due to their high concentration, it is advised to dilute essential oils with a fatty carrier oil, like jojoba, argan or coconut oil, before applying them to the skin to prevent irritation.
Look out for lavender oil for its soothing and antibacterial properties, frankincense oil to help treat scars and restore damaged skin, tea tree oil to help reduce acne-causing bacteria, and antioxidant-rich rosehip oil to help with cell regeneration.
As we get older, our cell regeneration gradually slows down, causing our skin to look dry, dull and wrinkled. Retinol (a derivative of vitamin A) exfoliates on a cellular level, boosting skin cell turnover to reveal brighter and smoother skin.
However, it takes at least three months of consistent use to visibly notice a reduction in fine lines, dark spots and acne.
Start with a low-strength retinol, building up to a higher strength formula after a year, and be sure to do your research or speak to your dermatologist about the best option for your skin type.
5. Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring component of skin tissue that has been synthetically recreated to help replenish, hydrate and protect the skin from environmental assault.
HA agrees with all skin types and has been found to boost the skin’s moisture content and defend against moisture loss.
This wonder ingredient can hold up to 1 000 times its weight in water, making it a great hydrating addition to include in your daily skincare regimen.
Be sure to keep sun protection, antioxidants, essential oils, retinol and hyaluronic acid in mind the next time you shop for skincare products. These are some of the most effective ingredients for improving your skin tone, texture and overall appearance.
