During the colder months your skin starts sending out SOS signals—tightness, flakiness, dullness, and increased sensitivity. The same products that kept your skin glowing in summer might not cut it when winter rolls around.
But the good news? A few thoughtful tweaks to your routine can help your skin stay hydrated, balanced, and radiant all season long.
What to add: Extra hydration & protection
A richer moisturiser
Swap out your lightweight gel or lotion for a richer cream or balm that offers deeper hydration and locks in moisture. Look for ingredients like ceramides, squalane, and shea butter to help repair and protect the skin barrier.
A hydrating serum or essence
Add a layer of hydration underneath your moisturizer. A hyaluronic acid serum, glycerin-based essence, or something with panthenol can plump and soothe dry skin.
Lip and eye care
Cold air and wind can be harsh on delicate areas. Use a nourishing lip balm (look for beeswax, lanolin, or vitamin E) and a hydrating eye cream to prevent dryness and irritation.
Facial oil (optional)
If your skin leans dry, adding a few drops of facial oil as the final step in your evening routine can seal everything in. Look for jojoba, rosehip, or marula oil.
Replace: Harsh formulas with gentler ones
Cleanser
If you’re using a foaming or gel cleanser with sulphates, it may strip your skin’s natural oils. Replace it with a cream, milk, or balm cleanser that gently removes dirt without drying out your skin.
Toner
Swap out alcohol-based toners for hydrating or calming toners that support your skin barrier. Ingredients like rose water, chamomile, and aloe vera are great for winter.
Exfoliants
Exfoliation is still important, but go easy. Switch to a gentler chemical exfoliant (like lactic acid or PHA) once or twice a week instead of daily scrubs, which can cause micro-tears on already sensitive skin.
Ditch: Summer staples that don’t serve Winter skin
Overly matte or oil-controlling products
That mattifying moisturiser or clay mask may have helped with summer shine, but it’s time to retire them for the season. In winter, your skin needs support, not oil control.
Fragrance-heavy products
Fragrance can be an irritant, especially when your skin barrier is already compromised from the cold. Opt for fragrance-free or low-fragrance options to reduce the risk of dryness and sensitivity.
Long, hot showers (we know, it’s hard)
Hot water strips your skin of essential oils, worsening dryness. Keep your showers warm and short, and moisturise immediately afterwards while your skin is still damp.
Bonus tips:
-
Humidifier: Adding moisture to your indoor air can make a huge difference for dry skin.
-
SPF—don’t ditch it! UV rays are still very much present in winter. Continue using sunscreen daily, especially if you’re near snow or spending time outdoors.
Winter skincare is all about support, protection, and hydration. Think creamy textures, moisture-binding ingredients, and barrier-loving products. With just a few swaps, your routine can help you glow through the snow.
